Mayabazar: A Magical Melody

Mayabazar: A Magical Melody

When considering what sets Indian movies apart from movies all over the world, one of the key differences is the music and dance. It's evident that to this day, the majority of Indian movies, whether low-budget or high-budget, still include songs in them. When delving deeper into how music came to be incorporated into films, one comes across many theories (which all make sense, by the way) that it was incorporated because inspiration was drawn for the cinemas from Indian theatre, or that, as radio was the most widely available source of entertainment in those days, Indian movies focused more on the musical part. Whatever the story behind the music in the movies is, music surely made a long-lasting impact in the industry.

"Mayabazar”, being an iconic movie, also features a lot of catchy music and dance sequences. The film starts with the song “Chinnari Sasirekha,” which serves as cultural narrative within the film, capturing the essence of a “half-saree function” which marks the transition of a female from girlhood to womanhood in South-Indian culture. The song also introduces us to the major supporting characters Krishna, Subhadra, and others in the family who play a significant role in our protagonist Sashirekha’s life.

As the film unfolds, another adored song from the movie is “Lahiri Lahiri Lahirilo,” where our main characters, Sasirekha and Abhimanyu serenade nature on a full moon night. This song also helps in moving the narration forward as it's revealed to the watchers that Krishna and Subhadra are supportive of love between our main characters. The visuals of the song were so enticing that they became a real trendsetter for many years after the movie where a boat ride with moonlight and breeze was the go to set for a couple to sing a pleasant song!

Some songs in “Mayabazar” are narrative, while others give us a glimpse into the customs and lifestyle of that era. The chariot rider singing a song closely depicts the folk songs sung by farmers while working to keep up the energy. The rider sings about life and how god works in mysterious ways. “Vinnava Yashodamma” not  only offers a glimpse into theatrical performances of that era but also enriches Krishna’s character by revealing his playful nature and trickery.

The song "Nee kosame” describes the profound yearning and deep affection that binds our protagonists together. As Sasirekha and Abhimanyu sing of their love and longing, the audience is reminded of the challenges they face and the obstacles they must overcome to be together. This builds anticipation and tension, propelling the narrative forward.

The marriage sequence of the movie contains many popular songs and is one of its best parts. It is a blend of distinct and familiar melodies. The most popular song in the movie is “Aha Naa Pellanta.” The song portrays the grandeur of regal traditions and majestic festivity of a royal marriage. It captures the brides’ radiant anticipation and joy as their wedding approaches. In the film's case, also their inner turmoil since Sashirekha doesn’t like the match.

The song “Sundari Oho Sundari” depicts the endeavours of a man trying to impress a woman and charm her by singing verses that praise her beauty and allure.“Vivaha Bhojanambu” is that uncommon song from the movie that sings to the souls of all food lovers out there. The lyrics vividly portray the glory of a wedding feast, showcasing an array of diverse dishes. The song also celebrates Telugu heritage , featuring traditional favourites such as the sweet ‘nethi laddu’ and the savoury ‘garelu’.

Mayabazar stands as a timeless classic that beautifully intertwines music, dance, and storytelling. The film’s soundtrack is not just a collection of songs but a narrative force that propels the plot and deepens the emotional connection with the characters.

Not only does "Mayabazar" contain magic, but the melodies do as well.
